I recently finished the book All Marketers are Liars by Seth Godin. I enjoyed the book, and here are my favorite quotes from it:

“Stories make it easier to understand the world. Stories are the only way we know to spread an idea. Marketers didn’t invent storytelling. They just perfected it.” (Page 2)

“Marketers profit because consumers buy what they want, not what they need. Needs are practical and objective, wants are irrational and subjective.” (Page 7)

“Different people, different worldviews. People can see the same data and make a totally different decision.” (Page 32)

“The problem with first impressions isn’t that they’re not important (They are important! They’re crucial!) but that we have no idea at all when that first impression is going to occur. Not the first contact, but the first impression.” (Page 73)

“People make decisions big and small based on just one thing: the lie we tell ourselves about what we’re about to do.” (Page 80)

And then on page 144, I won’t quote it directly, but Mr. Godin asks the reader how much they would pay for an anvil? What it it was inexpensive and really nice? The point he was getting at is, it wouldn’t matter if you don’t need one!
