My Definition of “Hero” is Probably Different Than Yours

Rather than Google the definition of a “hero,” how would you personally define it? What characteristics does a person need for you to classify them as such?

The obvious answers are people like doctors, nurses, firefighters, and the members of the police force. They literally save lives. But do you have any heroes that personally impacted you?

How I personally define “hero”

I have delicately chosen my definition of a hero as:

Someone who is in a unique position to drastically improve your life; be it physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually.

You can broadly break it down into two types:

  1. Those related to you
  2. Those not related to you

Family Heroes

Sure, “Mom and Dad” are easy- and acceptable- answers. But it’s also an obvious answer.

Think about those who aren’t related to you.

Non-Family Heroes

Those that you choose to be with or think about.

Examples of Non-Family Heroes

  1. “Celebrity,” for the lack of a better term. An actor, athlete, artist, musician, etc. It doesn’t have to be someone well-known world-wide; although they could be well-known for a niche or industry.
  2. Current/Former classmates or coworkers. Why though? Did they inspire you to become a better person? Do they put you at ease when you’re in an undesirable situation?

My Heroes

While I have plenty that fit my definition above, I’ll mention three of my heroes that stand out:

  1. I have a health issue that was rather a mystery to several doctors. 😷 But eventually I found the right doctor who was able to correctly diagnose and resolve it, making it a non-issue for me.
  2. A former college professor. A typical student doesn’t want to go to class nor find it fun. I did. 📚
  3. There’s a particular singer/song-writer. When I hear his music (specifically one of my favorite songs), I’m put in a slightly better mood. 🎼

How do you define a hero?

This is rhetorical. But who in your network of non-family members would you classify? Something to think about over the next few days.

Sorry, Mr. Grohl, I wasn’t referring to you. I just wanted another picture for this article.
